This is just my opinion from personal observations in the search for a good breakfast in the Selinsgrove area:
I am wondering what has happened to all the small, privately owned, one-of-a-kind breakfast restaurants? In this area there used to be Gary’s Farm House Restaurant, Golden Arrow Restaurant, Airport Restaurant, Selinsgrove Sub shop, Dawns Luncheonette, Kinfolks Restaurant and the Iron Skillet Restaurant. Then, when all those closed down, you could go to Lewisburg to Bechtel’s, or to the Dodge House. You could go West to Mom’s on 522. They all were great and had a regular customer base that was friendly and familiar if you went there on a regular basis. Now – all gone.
All of these places specialized in the kind of breakfast for which this area is known. Large servings of fried potatoes, crisp bacon, ham, eggs and omelettes cooked in butter, pancakes dripping with syrup, sausage, greasy scrapple and usually some form of “Mess”, that is everything cooked together served with “breakfast gravy” and/or biscuits for which they were known. One more thing, they all had good coffee. I wonder what happened to the good coffee. Good coffee is paramount!
I mean really! I grew up right here in the country outside of the little town of White Deer Pennsylvania. I was raised on this kind of breakfast. My mom and dad made this kind of breakfast for my brother and me. I think it is one of the best forms of “comfort food”. I guess that is the reason people think of it as “homey”.
I know there are places like Perkins, Denny’s, Bob Evans, Friendly’s and they all have good every day breakfast; but, not the friendly “homey” feeling of a one-of-a-kind locally owned regularly visited restaruant. They don’t have the same regular customers with whom to talk and continue that unfinished conversation you have had the last the last ten times!
This is not based on any extensive research I have done. If there are such places out there that you frequent as I have described, let me know in the comment section below so I can try them out. I will post your places and maybe I will see you.
